5 held for obstructing dumping of garbage

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Five persons, including a Kochi Corporation councillor, were arrested on Thursday by the Thoppumpady police for obstructing the Corporation from dumping garbage near Santom Colony, Mundamveli.

According to K.J. Prakasan, the Councillor who was arrested, the Corporation had been dumping the waste at the site and removing it at the end of the day.

Health hazards

But for the last four days, the garbage was not removed and fresh loads were being dumped, causing health hazards, the councillor said.

The local residents blocked the garbage truck at 4 p.m.

The police had to remove the protesters following a complaint by Junior Health Inspector of Kochi Corporation. Those arrested were later released on bail. The trucks were emptied on the spot after the protesters were removed. However, Mr. Prakasan said that no fresh load of garbage would be allowed to be dumped at the site without removing the existing pile.
