KOCHI: Thirty-seven girls received the graduate nursing school certificates in an elaborate ceremony at the Town Hall organised by the Institute of Nursing Education (INE), the Regional Centre of the School of Medical Education, M.G. University, Kottayam. They were the fifth batch of INE

The Minister for Fisheries and Sports, Dominic Presentation, inaugurated the programme. In his speech, he promised support to build up the infrastructure at the nursing school. The Minister said he would take up the issue of inadequate infrastructure facilities at the college with the Government and would help provide land and building for the nursing college. Talks are already on in this regard, he said.

Valsa Abraham, Head of the Department at INE, in her report complained of the lack of infrastructure at the institute. The last inspection at the institute by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) was in April 2002. It had withheld the recommendation for recognition to the institute for lack of infrastructure.

She said the INC norms required that a nursing school be attached to a hospital for clinical studies and that the school should be located on at least four acres of land. The INC inspection had called for some drastic steps for the institute starting from appointing adequate teaching faculty, hostel facilities, laboratory assistants to moving to a building owned by the institute.

Ms. Abraham said the university had taken some steps to rectify the situation. The school was started with affiliation to three private hospitals, Lisie Hospital, Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly and the Medical Trust Hospital.

Jancy James, Vice-Chancellor of M.G. University, gave the convocation address. She said nurses should take up the challenge of higher education.
