HYDERABAD: Over 3,500 students from the State have cleared the preliminary test of the IIT-JEE and the number is being put at 10 per cent of the total candidates appeared. The number looks impressive despite reports that the Mathematics paper was tough and only those with strong basics could solve the questions. Noted academic, Chukka Ramaiah, whose centre is known for IIT coaching, said that 145 candidates from a total of 150 from his centre cleared the test. He expects a good show from the State students in the Mains to be held on May 22 as only quality students could clear the prelims due to the new pattern of the Mathematics paper. The Narayana Group chairman, P. Narayana, said more than 1,800 students from his institutions passed the prelims and claimed it was a record of sorts. "Last year, too the institute got the maximum seats in IITs," he said. Sri Chaitanya Institutions said 754 of its students out of the total 1,437 cleared the test, a good number of these being from small towns and rural areas. B.S. Rao, Director of Chaitanya Institutions said rural students with Telugu medium background also fared well. Vijayawada Nalanda institutions said 683 students from its IIT-JEE academies made it to the mains. Vizag Vikas institutions also claimed that 523 students from their colleges qualified.
