Mystery shrouds murder of youth

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police have found several discrepancies in the statement of Abbas, 24, on whose information the body of Pradeep, 32, was found under a culvert at Vayalikonam in Attingal on Wednesday evening.

Pradeep was strangled, according to forensic doctors. The murder came to light when Abbas turned up at Attingal police station on Wednesday afternoon and told the Circle Inspector that he had killed Pradeep at the latter's request.

The police have found that Pradeep and Abbas were not in their houses on Tuesday night. The same night, gold ornaments weighing 40 sovereigns were reported stolen from the unoccupied house of a trader in Vayalikonam.

Two sets of finger-prints were recovered by the police from the scene of the theft.

The DySP, Attingal, B. Sasidharan, said Abbas's statement that he had met Pradeep for the first time at a bar in Attingal was suspect.

The bar hotel staff do not remember them. The owner of the shop from where Abbas said he and Pradeep bought plastic rope for the act has not identified them.

Both were seen by neighbours near the culvert at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Abbas had stated that Pradeep wanted to die because his love for a woman was unreciprocated.

But the police have no evidence so far of Pradeep having any such affair.

The DySP said the police were investigating whether there was any link between the burglary and the murder.
