BANGALORE: In a massive demolition drive that lasted over three hours, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) struck down several unauthorised commercial structures within the Jayanagar Shopping Complex and evicted about 100 vendors on Thursday evening. The operation was primarily intended to clear the various entrances to the complex and to ensure smooth passage for customers, the BMP Deputy Commissioner, V. Chandrashekhar, told The Hindu. About 250 BMP staff from the revenue, health and engineering departments took part in the operations. A huge police posse, including four platoons, was stationed around the complex. There were no untoward incidents barring passive resistance by some vendors. The operations, which started about 6 p.m. lasted till 9 p.m.
Complaints
Launched on the directions of the BMP Commissioner, R. Jothiramalingam, the demolition drive was triggered by complaints from traders and the public about the encroachments by vegetable and fruit vendors. The complaints had gone up to the petitions committee in the Legislative Assembly. Dr. Chandrashekhar said the complaints related to lack of basic amenities such as water and uninterrupted power supply, were being attended to in a phased manner. The illegal extensions of shops, including signboards, were put by authorised shopkeepers. These were struck down by the BMP staff. Two JCBs, a dozen lorries and jeeps were involved in the operations. "We told even the authorised traders not to obstruct the passages for the public. The customers should be able to move around without any hassles," the Deputy Commissioner said. The unauthorised vendors were reportedly issued notices to clear six weeks ago. But they chose to ignore the notices. "Today, we gave them sufficient time to vacate with their belongings. Except resistance from one or two pockets, the process was smooth. The general public were happy with our operations."
