Murder case solved, man arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old man has been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly killing a man, whose body was found inside the Siri Fort complex on April 20.

According to the police, the body, later identified as that of a daily-wage worker, Badri, was found in the toilet of the administrative building in the complex where renovation work was going on. Badri's head had been badly smashed.

Earlier, the police had difficulty in establishing the identity of the deceased. He used to come to work along with another young man but the contractor had not written down the particulars of the two in his register. The only clue with the police was that he was residing somewhere near Sadiq Nagar. Later, the police zeroed in on Jamrudpur in South Delhi and managed to trace his rented accommodation.

The police said Badri used to live in a rented accommodation along with the youngster, identified as Kamal Yadav, and six others. On April 21, Kamal left for his native place in Bihar on the pretext that he was suffering jaundice. A police team was sent to his village but Kamal had again left the village and returned to Delhi. Finally, he was arrested this past Monday from New Delhi railway station.

Kamal told the police that he decided to kill Badri as he was not giving him his share in the money he collected from the contractor.

On April 18, Kamal bought whisky and the next day, when all the labourers had left, offered Badri the same. Badri consumed it quickly and got intoxicated. Kamal then picked up a hammer and hit Badri on face and head. As he fell down, Kamal strangulated him with his "gamchha" and also took out Rs. 440 from his pocket.

Kamal then went to his village and told his family members that Badri died after he fell from a height at a construction site. The police said the hammer, allegedly used in the crime, has been recovered at his instance.

Further investigations in the case are on.
