Alleged suicide

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire in her house at Nangloi in West Delhi on Thursday. She was apparently passing through a phase of depression.

According to the police, Manju, daughter of Kartar Singh, a resident of Veena Enclave in Nangloi, today returned from school around 1 p.m. and went straight into the kitchen where she locked herself up. She then poured kerosene oil all over her and set herself ablaze. She died on the spot. No suicide was recovered.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Manju, a Class IX student in a government school, was weak in studies and often remained reclusive. Her father, a lineman with MTNL, was also facing financial difficulties as he had a total of six children to support. Manju was the only daughter and all five brothers were younger than her.

Meanwhile, the Nangloi police have registered a case and are trying to ascertain the exact reason behind the deceased taking the extreme step.

Woman held with liquor

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: A 45-year-old woman, allegedly involved in 25 cases of Excise Act, was arrested by the West Delhi police on Thursday. The police recovered 432 quarters of Indian-made foreign liquor form her.

The police said Melo, wife of Basanta, a resident of Raghubir Nagar was arrested near her house. The recovered liquor was meant for sale in Chandigarh only. Both husband and wife are alleged bad characters of the area.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered and further investigations are on.

Undertrial bites cop

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: In a bizarre case, an undertrial being escorted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital in West Delhi for a HIV test on Thursday allegedly bit the constable who was escorting him.

According to the police, Constable Om Pal of Third Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police was escorting 30-year-old Nand Kishore, lodged in Tihar Central Jail on charges of attempt to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and outraging the modesty of a woman, to the hospital when the incident occurred. As soon as they reached the hospital, Nand Kishore bit him on the hand. However, he did not escape.

The doctors later carried out an HIV test on Nand Kishore which turned out to be negative. On Wednesday, he was also put through a MRI scan and the report was not normal.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Hari Nagar police station and further investigations are on.

`Dakhila abhiyan' launched

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: The Delhi Government today launched a mass literacy campaign called `dakhila abhiyan' to motivate denizens to send their children to school.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely flagged off a `prabhat pheri' to launch the week-long campaign.

The `dakhila abhiyan' is part of the scheme of `Education For All' programme initiated by UNESCO.

As part of the campaign, street plays, `padyatras' and cycle rallies have been planned. In addition, video vans with facilities for displaying CDs about importance of education would do the rounds of all districts of Delhi, particularly the slum clusters.

The services of MLAs, councillors, NGOs, activists in the field of education and volunteers of `vidyarthi kalyan samitis' have been sought for making the week-long campaign successful.
