Teaching by example

CHENNAI: : In any branch of learning theoretical concepts need the backup of practical application. This is especially true of religion and philosophy.

Only that which is taught by practice along with precept can make a meaningful impact on the learner. A teacher of morals or ethics will carry conviction only if he lives up to the norms. One reason why the Bhagavad Gita and the philosophy expounded therein appealed to the intellectual and the layman alike is that the propounder (Lord Krishna) had lived by example (as Lord Rama) whatever He preached, said Velukkudi Sri V. Krishnan in his discourse. Though the values of life have been enshrined in the sacred texts and scriptures, posterity draws inspiration from the life led by Rama.

The character of Rama is such that even an enemy speaks highly of Him. Instances are many to prove this point. Soorpanaka, Vali and Maricha, who fell to Rama's arrows did not fail to praise His glory.

The value of Rama Nama is repeatedly stressed in the Vedas, Sastras, Puranas and the scriptures. It is believed to be a Taraka Mantra that snaps the cycle of birth and death. Its efficacy has been authenticated by the faith of those who have uttered this name and attained liberation.

Lord Siva preached the greatness of this divine name to his consort Parvati, and held it unique among the chosen 1000 names of Lord Vishnu. Chanting Rama Nama is deemed to be as efficacious as chanting the `Sahasranama'.

Among the incarnations of the Lord, the uniqueness of the incarnation as Lord Rama has been quoted and extolled by many scholars, saints, Azhwars and poets. The fervent devotional poetry of the Azhwars is replete with references to the spiritual potency of the Rama Nama, which is even hailed as an antidote to death. Nammazhwar, whose poems display an overt partiality for Lord Krishna, speaks very highly of Lord Rama. The poet states that Rama's life story captivates one and all. The value rich text is a delight to scholars as well as it contains all that one needs to know. It is said that the Lord blessed every aspect in Ayodhya, and gave Moksha to one and all who lived during His lifetime.
