dated April 30, 1955: Heavy fighting in Saigon

Hundreds of people were feared killed or wounded in Saigon on April 28 in heavy fighting which may mark the start of a full-scale civil war in South Viet Nam. The battle between national forces and private army troops defying Premier Ngo Dinh Diem is the biggest clash since Viet Nam was divided into Communist North and anti-Communist South under last year's Geneva armistice ending the eight-year-old Indo-China war.
