NABARD to focus on agriculture, allied activities NABARD to give thrust on agriculture this fiscal

R. Vimal Kumar

To fund projects identified by State Government

TUTICORIN: : National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is to focus on flow of ground-level credits to agricultural and allied activities in Tuticorin district during the current fiscal, as part of the action plan for 2005-06.

Speaking to The Hindu , Rangachari Bharat Kumar, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, said they would monitor credit flow and supplement it with refinancing facilities to banks.

"Refinancing facilities will be arranged for crop loans, farm mechanisation, minor irrigation, development of lands and activities such as animal husbandry, poultry, fisheries and horticulture."

He said the Potential-Linked Credit Plan drafted by NABARD would attain greater significance this fiscal, as the branches of various banks no longer prepare village plans.

On the other core/thrust areas earmarked for this fiscal, he said the bank plans to fund development projects identified by the State Government, so as to fill critical gaps in the infrastructure front.

"Funds will be sanctioned from our Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) pool as and when projects are submitted by the State Government to us," he said adding sanctioning of funds would be subject to technical and financial viability of the projects concerned.

RIDF 2004-05

During the last fiscal year, NABARD had sanctioned RIDF loans for school, irrigation, drinking water, road and veterinary hospital projects in the district.

Loans to the tune of Rs.207.68 lakhs were sanctioned for irrigation projects at eight places in the district and Rs.6.66 lakhs towards drinking water schemes at Koilkudiyiruppu, Pillamarnatham and Subramaniapuram.

Mr. Kumar said the bank sanctioned RIDF loans for 39 veterinary hospitals, 12 road and 45 school projects during the last financial year, besides loans for establishment of rainwater harvesting structures at Chettikurichi, Salanaickenpatti, Valsalapatti, Veilukandapuram, Adaikkalapuram and Pudupatti villages.
