23 killed, many injured as attacks rock Baghdad

BAGHDAD: Militants carried out a series of deadly attacks on Friday, including 10 car bombings in and around Baghdad, killing at least 23 Iraqis and wounding 80. The attacks came a day after the interim National Assembly approved an interim Cabinet line-up.

An audio tape purportedly by one of America's most-wanted militants, Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, was posted on Friday on the Internet threatening more attacks against the U.S. forces and warning against collaborating with Americans. The authenticity of the 18-minute tape could not immediately be confirmed. The voice on the tape directly addressed U.S. President George W. Bush.

``You, Bush, we will not rest until we avenge our dignity,'' the voice said. ``We will not rest while your army is here as long as there is a pulse in our veins.'' One Thursday night, an American soldier was killed and four were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Hawija, a city about 240 km north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said. As of Thursday, April 28, 2005, at least 1,572 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 10 car bombs exploded in seven areas in and around Baghdad on Friday, the U.S. military said. Four American soldiers suffered injuries in the attacks, it said without providing details. — AP
