NAGAPATTINAM: Farmers of Nagapattinam district have urged the Chief Minister to announce a special debt relief package and convene a meeting of farmers' associations in the Cauvery delta region and progressive farmers to evolve the package. Participating in the farmers' grievance day meeting convened by the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, here on Thursday, Arupathi Kalyanam, a progressive farmer and general secretary of the Federation of Farmers' Associations in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, said that farmers had been demanding special debt relief package for the past three years. He said that farmers in the Cauvery delta region had incurred a loss of nearly Rs.10,000 crores in the last 12 years by various natural calamities. They could not repay their farm loans. Unless a special package was announced, it would be difficult for delta farmers to survive. He urged the Government to give full subsidy to create ponds and suggested that a pond in the size of one-acre should be created for every 10 acres of land as it would benefit farmers in a big way in supplementing surface water irrigation. Besides, 25 per cent of wetland should be cultivated with useful trees that would help farmers at the time of distress. A large number of farmers asked the Collector to ensure availability of all inputs to carry out kuruvai cultivation in the ensuing season. The Collector assured them that he would do the needful.
