Attacked

TUTICORIN: The police are on the lookout for a person named Thirumani on the charge of assaulting his mother-in-law at Melamanthai on Thursday.

The police said the accused attacked Rakkammal (42) with a sickle and inflicted injuries on her left wrist owing to differences between them.

The Soorangudi police are investigating the case.

Four accused surrender

TUTICORIN: Four persons accused in a murder case at Veeravanallur in Tirunelveli district surrendered at a Tuticorin court on Friday.

The police said Prabhakar and three others came to the District Court complex in the morning and surrendered themselves before a judicial magistrate. — Staff Reporter

Head constable dies

TUTICORIN: A head constable attached to the Tiruchendur Temple police station died at work on Friday.

Chellaiah (50) came to the station for duty in the morning as usual. He suddenly developed some uneasiness while still at work and was rushed to a private hospital where he died.

The police said the deceased was said to have been suffering from cancer for quite sometime now. Senior police officials condoled his death. — Staff Reporter

Welfare assistance distributed

TUTICORIN: The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, on Thursday evening distributed welfare assistance under various government schemes to a group of physically challenged persons.

At a function held at Pudur, Mr. Chandrsekaran gave away tricycles to 10 persons, wheelchairs to three and sewing machines to two.

He also distributed artificial limbs to two physically challenged persons, bus passes to 21, hearing aids for six and identity cards to 10 others. Balamani, District Social Welfare Officer, and Shanti Glory Emerald, District Rehabilitation Officer, were present.- — Staff Reporter

Gram sabha meetings

THANJAVUR: Grama Sabha meetings will be held in 589 village panchayats in this district on May 1, says the Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, a press release.

The meeting will discuss environment and sanitation issues besides approving budget for new projects. Discussion on child rights will be held. The Collector appealed to the people to participate in the meetings and contribute to the development of the village. — Staff Reporter

Relief extended

THANJAVUR: A total of 5,013 tsunami-affected families in Pattukottai and Peravurani taluks can get three litres of kerosene, free of cost, and 10 litres of kerosene at the government-fixed price for their ration cards for the month of April 2005, says the Collector M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, in a press release issued here today.

These families had availed the benefits in January, February and March also. — Staff Reporter

More beneficiaries

THANJAVUR: A total of 20,000 beneficiaries have been added under Andhyodhaya Annayojana in Thanjavur district, according to the Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni.

In a press release, he said that these beneficiaries could get proper seal from taluk supply officers in their ration cards and get 35 kg of rice at the rate of Rs. three per kg from April 2005. — Staff Reporter

Lighting to be improved

THANJAVUR: Lighting will be improved at Iravatheeswaraswamy temple at Darasuram near Kumbakonam by fixing focus lamps at a cost of Rs. 21 lakhs.

"Work will be started from Monday," said Tourism Department officials. The Department of Tourism, Government of India, has sanctioned Rs. 21 lakhs for the work.

The lighting will be on the lines of Big Temple at Thanjavur with lights focussing on the Vimana of the temple.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation has declared the temple as a world heritage monument recently. — Staff Reporter

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.97 feet today. The inflow was 185 cusecs and the discharge 800 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

Krishnagiri: Two persons were killed on the spot when the two-wheeler in which they were travelling collided with a State Transport bus at Bharathi Nagar near here on Friday.

The police have identified the deceased as Shanmugam (35) and his friend Selvaraj (32) of Gandhi Nagar. - Staff Reporter

Tahsildar dies during jamabandhi

ERODE: An official in the rank of tahsildar engaged in jamabandhi work (annual revenue account verification programme) in Kangeyam died of heart attack. According to revenue officials Fakrudeen, working as PA to Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Dharapuram, came to Kangeyam on Thursday to assist the RDO in the Jamabandhi.

On Friday evening, he developed chest pain while verifying some records at the Kangeyam taluk office. He died on way to a nearby hospital.

Row over worship: 20 injured

ERODE: Twenty persons were injured in a clash between two communities at Bhommanpatty, near Kavindapady, over worship at a temple.

The police said when a community erected a pandal and started worshipping the presiding deity, another community objected to it stating that they had no right to do so.

They removed the pandal, which resulted in a clash. Armed police pickets have been posted in the village.

Withdraw `bogus cases': Swamy

CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Thursday criticised the State Government for "foisting" cases against the Manager of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt, Sundaresa Iyer, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

In a statement, he called for the withdrawal of "all bogus cases." Last year, the Government arrested Mr. Iyer under the Goondas Act, which was intended for habitual offenders. Mr. Iyer, he said, had no previous record of any offence and was known to be a respected figure among the devotees. — Special Correspondent

IA reschedules flights

CHENNAI: Indian Airlines has rescheduled its Mumbai-Chennai-Mumbai and return flights for "operational reasons, with effect from May 1. The Mumbai-Madurai and Madurai-Mumbai services via Chennai have been delinked.

Effective May 3, the services (IC-737/738) on the Chennai-Bangkok-Chennai sector will be operated to revised timings, says an IA release. — Special Correspondent

MIOT Hospitals

CHENNAI: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations has chosen MIOT Hospitals here to receive the Niryat Shree/Bandhu Gold Trophy for "excellent export performance during 2003-03." The award will be presented by the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath, in New Delhi on May 13 at Hotel Park Royal. — Special Correspondent

Entrance exam put off

CHENNAI: The entrance examination for B.A.B.L (Hons) course offered by the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has been postponed to May 21.

The last date for issue and submission of applications has been extended to May 11. The examination was originally scheduled for May 8. The Ethiraj College for Women here, however, will remain the venue for the examination, says a release. — Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Advocate J. Rajendra Prasad has been re-elected president of the Law Association here. The other office-bearers elected on April 25 are: Thomas Pari Mannan (vice-president); T.V. Krishna Kumar and S. Natana Rajan (joint secretaries); C.P. Sasikumar (treasurer) and C.D. Kamaraj (librarian). An 11-member executive committee was also elected. — Staff Reporter

Guns seized, four held

ATTUR: Four persons who carried country-made guns were arrested at Ethapur near here on Thursday.

Following information that four `suspicious-looking' persons were hiding in a bush near Santhaipettai at Ethapur, police rushed to the spot and nabbed Annamalai, Manickam, another Annamalai and again another Manickam, all belonging to Varam in Villupuram district. They told the police that they planned to commit dacoity. The police seized the guns and remanded them. — Special Correspondent

7 child labourers rescued

TUTICORIN: The National Child Labour Project (NCLP) officials rescued seven child labourers in the district in raids conducted from Wednesday to Friday.

M. Nallaperumal, project director, said all the children were found employed in shops at Satankulam, Nazerth and Srivaikuntam areas.

While Muthukumar, Natarajan and Nambi were rescued from cloth, tailor and auto spare shops at Nazereth, Marimuthu and Ratish Babu were employed in shops at Srivaikuntam.The team rescued Muthuvinayakam and Isaki Muthu from a jewellery mart and cool drinks outlet at Satankulam. — Staff Reporter
