Workshop for children

KOLLAM: The Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidyamandir here is organising a week-long workshop from May 2. Children injured

Thiruvananthapuram: Three children were injured, one seriously, in a country-bomb explosion near Valiathura sewage farm on Friday evening. The police identified the injured as Lizzie, 7, her brother Pramod, 9, and Sumesh, 12. The children have been admitted to the Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Man found dead

THRISSUR: A 24-year-old man, accused in several cases, was found dead at Kallur near Pudukkad. The police said the deceased was Sajish, alias Sajimon, of Kallur Chungam area. It was suspected that a few anti-social elements in the area had murdered him. According to the police, Sajish was an accused in at least 13 cases at Pudukkad Police Station, including those of gang fights and trading of illicit liquor. — Staff Reporter

Calamity fund

being set up

KOZHIKODE: V.K.C. Mammad Koya, MLA, inaugurated the calamity fund being set up by Cheruvannur-Nallalam grama panchayat at a programme here on Thursday. The grama panchayat president, P. Baby Girija, presided. The fund has been set up to provide assistance during exigencies. — Staff Reporter

Applications invited

Applications have been invited for the two-year special teacher training course recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India and National Institute for Mentally Handicapped by the Association for Welfare of Handicapped here. The applicants should have passed Plus Two. Preference will be given to those with higher educational qualifications, parents of children with mental disabilities, and those working in special schools and related fields. Strike

The administrative staff of Akashvani and Doordarshan, Kozhikode branch, resorted to a `pen down' strike on Thursday following a call by the Adasa National Council. They demanded wage revision for employees in the engineering and programme divisions. — Staff Reporter

RSP(M) to focus on

working class interests

Thiruvananthapuram: The Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, who was elected as the general secretary of the RSP (Marxist), has said that the new party would make all attempts to recover the RSP tradition of upholding working class interests.

In a statement here today, the Minister said that the RSP landed in problems because of the emergence of leaders who failed to uphold the interests of the working class. He said that the party had decided not to admit the Chavara MLA, Shibu Baby John, on account of the strong opposition registered by party workers.

In another statement, the RSP (M) leader, K. P. Sankaradas said that the RSP (M) would expand its functional areas by bring together all RSP groups in Bengal and Tripura that had fallen apart with the party leadership.— Special Correspondent

Sarma refutes report

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K.S. Vasudeva Sarma, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, has refuted the report that the Chief Minister's proposal submitted by him to the Delimitation Commission was rejected by its chairman, Justice Kuldip Singh. In a written rejoinder here today he said that his meeting with Justice Singh was only a courtesy call. He had not submitted any proposal and there was therefore no question of any rejection..— Special Correspondent

Shibu joins issue with Babu Divakaran

KOLLAM: The RSP(B) leader, Shibu Baby John, MLA, said on Friday that he was surprised to hear of reports that the RSP(M) leader and Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, was considering a "so-called interest from his side to join the latter's party." In an open letter to Mr. Divakaran, copies of which were made available to the media here, Mr. Shibu questioned the former's statements in this regard.

Mr. Shibu said that he would not be so thoughtless to join such a party and ruin his political career. He said Mr. Divakaran should stop spreading such canards.

They were aimed at creating confusion among the RSP(B) cadres, he said. — Staff Reporter

Bail pleas dismissed

Kochi: The Kerala High Court, on Friday, dismissed bail petitions filed by C.K. Boben and K.T Charley, first and third accused, respectively, in the container smuggling case.

Dismissing the petitions, Justice K.T. Sankaran said there was merit in the contention of the Assistant Solicitor-General, John Varghese, that the possibility of using the goods smuggled out by the accused for anti-national activities could not be ruled out at this stage. The gang had earlier used fabricated documents for clearance of containers from the Cochin port. More persons had to be questioned and data collected from various places including foreign countries. — Staff Reporter

Telecom adalat in May

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The next telecom adalat of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. will be held in May. The date and time of the adalat will be intimated to the petitioners by post. The circle adalat will consider only cases that had not been settled at the SSA adalat. — Staff Reporter
