CHENNAI: The International Volleyball Federation's (FIVB) executive committee meeting, which concluded at its headquarters in Lausanne on Thursday, decided to give further thrust to promotion of the game and also discussed about the conduct of the 2006 World senior championships, to be held in Japan. Apart from the eight development centres in Tunisia, Senegal, Sudan, Thailand, Bahrain, India, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, the FIVB President, Ruban Acosta, introduced the idea of creating two international training centres in Mexico and Israel. These centres will be open to neighbouring countries and the Palestine players will have access to the Israel centre. The President of the Financial Commission, B. Sivanthi Adityan, presented his report for 2004 with assets of $190 million, including current contracts. The EC also expressed its satisfaction with the ongoing qualification process for the 2006 World championship, which has seen a record participation of 174 countries (77 women and 97 men teams) 62 of the 174 having never participated before. England, Sudan, South Africa, Taiwan and Indonesia qualified for the second round, but Egypt won its second round too and earned a berth for the Japan championship. In the women's section, Serbia and Spain qualified for the second round. Egypt won its second round and qualified. At the end of 52 tournaments all over the world (women's 21 and men's 31) 48 men's and women's teams will go to Japan for the final showdown. Incidentally, India is figuring in the men's qualifier this time too and Chennai will host the qualifiers in June and July.
