HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the Government would not shy away from redressing the problems confronted by people and exhorted the elected representatives to come to the rescue of the suffering masses.

Dr. Reddy was speaking at the general body meeting of the APCC here on Friday where K. Keshava Rao was declared elected unanimously as the State Congress party president by Pradesh Returning Officer Basavaraj.

"Going by the present pace of development, the Congress will surely retain power with a thumping majority after five years," Dr. Reddy said. The TDP and the BJP were perturbed about their existence once the going irrigation projects were completed. Notwithstanding the negative propaganda by the TDP, free power supply would continue, he remarked.

Praja Patham timing

He said despite reservations from leaders over the timing of the Praja Patham programme he decided to launch it in summer. The meeting saw the Congress leaders lashing out at the naxalites for stepped up violence and the killing of innocents. They underscored the need for close coordination between the Government and the APCC. They reminded the Government that the leaders could not take things for granted, as people would not forgive them if the promises were not fulfilled. Expressing the Government's willingness to resume talks, Dr. Reddy opposed violence by the naxalites. He said Dr. Keshava Rao insisted that the Government commence a dialogue with the naxalite groups.

The Endowments Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, expressed concern over the rising tension between the naxals and police. V. Hanumantha Rao, MP, denounced the killings of village level cadres. He wondered whether the naxalite ideology spoke of eliminating the poor while ignoring the influential and affluent classes.

The former Chief Minister, N. Janardhana Reddy, in lighter vein, said that Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy was giving sleepless nights to party leaders by launching a series of programmes. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, must also be having sleepless nights at the way the Chief Minister was touring the State, he said.

The newly elected president Keshava Rao said he would follow Mahatma Gandhi's ideals in fulfilling people's aspirations. The AICC secretaries - Daljit Singh and Jayakumar - were present. D. Srinivas and K. Rosaiah, Ministers, and G. Venkataswamy, CWC member, spoke.
