Two students excel in IIT-JEE screening

TIRUPATI: Students of two corporate colleges in Tirupati have excelled in the IIT-JEE screening test, the results of which were announced on Thursday. While 12 out of the 25 students from Sri Chaitanya group, who took the test, have secured entry into the main entrance test slated for May 22, 12 out of 35 students from Vikas have been selected.__Staff Reporter.

`Chalo Parliament'

KURNOOL: Madiga Employees' Federation on Friday released a poster appealing people of the community to make the `Chalo Parliament' on May 5 a success. The president of the Federation, Venkaiah, and its secretary, K. Ramanjaneyulu, said besides the demonstration, the delegation would meet the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. Student ends life

NELLORE: C.V. Sureshkumar Reddy, 20, a third year B.Tech student of Narayana Engineering College, Nellore, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Thursday.

According to the IV Town police, he was staying in a room in Ramalingapuram area along with three others and resorted to the extreme step in their absence.

He died on the way to hospital.

Probe sought

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Municipal Employees' Association today demanded an enquiry into alleged irregularities in the purchase of sanitary articles by nine municipalities in 2003. In a representation to the Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy, L.Tajmohan Reddy, president, urged the Government to rectify the anomalies in postings in ten municipalities and implement the Supreme Court order on regulating appointments of third grade commissioners in their local areas. - Staff Reporter

Explosives seized from Maoists near Peetarai

VISAKHAPATNAM: There was an exchange of fire between the police and Maoists near Peetarai village in Gudem Kotha Veedhi mandal on Friday. The police recovered a large cache of explosives, weapons, literature, etc., from the scene.

Two poclains burnt

ADILABAD: Maoists belonging to the Mangi dalam burnt two poclains and damaged 12 tractors belonging to a road contractor at Loddiguda village in Tiryani mandal on Friday. - Staff Reporter

Writ plea on projects: notices issued

HYDERABAD: The High Court on Friday ordered notices in a writ petition filed seeking establishment of a commission to oversee rehabilitation of displaced families due to irrigation projects, especially Thotapally project. Fisheries Development Officer murdered

Rajahmundry: A Fisheries Development Officer of Amalapuram, Medisetty Subrahmanyam (35), was hacked to death here on Friday. There were 20 stab injuries on his body while the throat was throttled. Subrahmanyam is survived by wife, and a four-year-old girl. Dog squad and Clues team reached the spot on Friday evening and began the investigation. - Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: A cotton farmer, G. Gattaiah (35), committed suicide by consuming pesticide in his fields in Adavisrirampur mandal of Mutharam mandal on Thurday night due to increasing debts. - Staff Reporter

Teacher, daughter found dead

KARIMNAGAR: A Government school teacher, S. Padma (36), along with her three-year-old daughter, Sushmita, were found dead with severe burn injuries in their house in Mankammathota locality of the town on Friday. Her husband and in-laws were present in the house at the time of the incident, the police said. - Staff Reporter

Girl dies in hailstorm

NALGONDA: A tribal girl of Ramachandragudem in Mathampally mandal in Nalgonda district was killed after being hit by hailstones on Friday. The hailstorm hit 10 villages in which 50 houses were damaged. Staff Reporter

Nursing school attacked by women

NELLORE: A group of protestors, including women, entered a nursing school on the outskirts of the town on Friday, and allegedly damaged its furniture and windowpanes. They were protesting against the death of a student of the institution who had allegedly committed suicide on April 18. The police took into custody 10 persons. Staff Reporter

2 shepherds drowned

NIZAMABAD: Two shepherds, B. Narasaiah (50) and Kurama Suresh (25) of Mullangi (B) village in Makloor mandal were drowned in Damara Cheruvu, on the outskirts of the mandal headquarter town, on Friday afternoon. The two got drowned when they went to the tank to wash their sheep. - Staff Reporter
