JAIPUR: The Congress party has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government in Rajasthan of failing to protect the State's interests in the sharing of the waters of the Chambal river with the neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. Ever since the new Government came to power in the State, the share of expenses from Madhya Pradesh for the upkeep of the Chambal canal system had not been collected, it charged. The chief spokesperson of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, Chadrashekhar Baid, said in a statement here that the State Government had been keeping quiet over the past 15 months about the share of Madhya Pradesh in the maintenance of the Chambal Canal. "It looks as if Ms. Raje is emotionally more attached to her home State, Madhya Pradesh, than to her in-laws' place, Rajasthan,'' Dr.Baid observed. "It should have been the first priority of the Raje Government after taking over to make the Madhya Pradesh pay up its share in maintenance of the canal system,'' he added. The lack of proper maintenance of the canal system was depriving the farmers, at the tail end of the network, of water. The leakages were leading to water logging at places resulting in a decline in agricultural production, Dr.Baid said. The Congress spokesperson also charged that with the construction of 152 minor irrigation projects and check dams in Madhya Pradesh in the recent past, the 0.229 million cubic feet water which was due to Rajasthan, was not reaching the Gandhi Sagar dam from where water is released. "Why is the Chief Minister, who speaks of procuring every drop of water due to Rajasthan, silent about this?'' Dr.Baid asked.
