Protest against arch demolition

Students stage rasta roko, burn Minister's effigy

NIZAMABAD: : Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Friday staged a rasta-roko on the National Highway-7 and burnt the effigy of the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohammad Ali Shabbir, to protest against the demolition of a welcome arch at the Government Degree College at Kamareddy.

They demanded that the arch be reconstructed at the same place and culprits be arrested. They alleged that the arch, constructed in 1986, was removed at the behest of the leaders of the National Students Union of India.

The construction became controversial ever since the National Academic Accreditation Committee (NAAC) visited the college in the recent past. The SFI students questioned the college principal the rationale behind the colouring of the arch in saffron and embossing ABVP on it.

They demanded the principal that the saffron colour and ABVP be removed while the ABVP activists vehemently opposed it.

In this backdrop, some persons demolished the arch last night leading to protests by the ABVP and the Bharatiya Janata Party workers. The ABVP leader, Jaipal Reddy, and the BJP leaders--Venugopal Rao and A. Prabhakar Rao -- led the protest.
