UDHAGAMANDALAM: The need to expedite work on converting the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty-Gudalur Road into a national highway has been emphasised by the Citizens Forum of Ootacamund. Pointing out that the Forum had been informed that the Union Government had approved some time ago the conversion of the Coimbatore-Kakkanullah highway which passed through the Nilgiris into a national highway, the president of the Forum, K. Gopal, told The Hindu here on Friday that funds had been allocated and an office had been opened here. He regretted that there was an inordinate delay in work commencing.
Concern over delay
Pointing out that the stretch from Burliar to Gudalur was now in an appalling condition, he said that it not only hindered free flow of traffic but also caused accidents. Stating that the progress of any region was to a large extent dependent on good roads, Mr. Gopal said that since the Nilgiris was a vacation destination it would benefit a significant extent if the national Highway project were implemented early.
Priority to project
He said that he would appeal to the authorities concerned to accord priority to the project in view of its important role in ensuring the economic well being of the district. Expressing concern over the improper functioning of BSNL cell phone connections during peak hours in spite of several towers being erected in different parts of the district, he hoped that the authorities would set right matters before matters got worse.
Removal of encroachments
Appreciating the `bold steps' taken by the district and civic authorities and the police to remove encroachments in the town, he said that the Forum acknowledged with gratitude the long overdue efforts and expressed the confidence that they would be continued without `fear or favour' in the interest of the town and its citizens.
