Yercaud summer fete to focus on tribal culture

Special Correspondent

SALEM: This year's Yercaud Summer Festival, slated to begin from May 25, will provide the tribal flavour to the tourists.

Though the date of opening is tentative, the district administration has already approached three Ministers with invitation to participate in the five-day festival. It is reliably learnt that these Ministers have approved the date and given the `go-ahead' signal.

The administration, as a prelude to the preparatory work for the summer festival held a discussion with the officials and the members of the Yercaud Summer Festival Committee. The Collector, A. Sukumaran, who presided over the meeting, had sought a total cooperation from the members of the committee for the successful conduct of the festival.

He said that the focus on the festival should be showcasing the tribal culture. "The indigenous people's sentiments, custom and culture should be highlighted," he pointed out. The arts of these indigenous people would be staged. The power of tribal youths would be exhibited through various sports events. He also insisted that the hill station should be geared up for the festival in all aspects. The visitors must be given necessary facilities and adequate security. He also asked the officials concerned to ply vehicles to all tribal villages so that the people living in remote areas could visit Yercaud during the festival time.

The Collector was sternly against the defacing of the hill station with bills and posters of commercial nature and other activities. The hill station, he insisted, should be neat and clean and pleasing to the eyes of the visitors, expecting from neighbouring States too. "Even the parapet walls of Ghat Road should be given a face-lift and no advertisements should be permitted on its walls. Violators should be severely punished," he told the officials.

Facilities to visitors

He asked the Horticultural Department to provide adequate toilet facilities to the visitors who would throng its Park during the festival days. The hill station had no other place for erecting such facilities. He told the officials and members of the committee that the festival would give importance to tribals.
