ERODE: After a heated discussion the Municipal Council today decided to lease out the burning ghat and burial ground to the local people, who were traditionally involved in the disposal of the deceased. Earlier, Radhamani Bharathy, an Independent councillor, objected to this and demanded the involvement of women Self-Help Groups. The vice-chairman, Market Raja, and other councillors said people in the Krishnampalayam area were experienced in the job and to avoid complaints it was necessary that they be allowed to continue with it. A heated discussion ensued with Ms. Bharathy on one side and rest of the councillors on the other side for almost half an hour. Later, Mr. Raja announced the decision. Referring the issue of encroachments, Mr. Raja said the authorities should go ahead with eviction drive without fear or fervour. He said one person was occupying a vast space of the Municipal premises and he had also leased out the encroached portion. He demanded immediate eviction of the person. The chairman, M. Subramanian, said as per the decision of the Traffic Advisory Committee all encroachments would soon be evicted. Geetha (DMK) said at many places degraded mutton was sold to public. The Commissioner, Jayaraman said that all the animals intended for slaughter were being examined by a veterinary doctor and after the slaughter too he was examining it. He said a spacious place would soon be selected for slaughtering sheep and goats. Siraj (DMK), S. Rajendran (AIADMK) and Arjunan (Independent) wanted to remove the damaged lampposts and erect new ones in the place.
