ANANTAPUR: Contrary to the memorable experience to many of her classmates and colleagues, the 13th convocation of Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) will remain a bitter experience for S. Jafarunnisa, a gold medallist M.Sc.(mathematics). She toiled hard for two years to be chosen for the honour of a gold medal in the name of `Prof R. Seetharama Swamy Memorial Prize' for the year 2004. But, when the hour of reckoning came, it was denied to her by the callousness of the university authorities coupled with her ignorance. Toppers and gold medal-winners, who received their awards from the Chancellor (Vice-Chancellor on this occasion), on Friday were intimated through call letters. By producing the letters the candidates were supposed to take the "letter of admission'' from the examinations department for participating in the convocation. As the call letters were dispatched within a short time, some students did not received them and Ms. Jafarunnisa is one among them. In spite of being aware that she did not receive the intimation, she was confident that she would be allowed to receive the gold medal, ignorant of the practice. However, she went to the venue only to be denied entry. As the time was running out to enter the convocation hall (auditorium) she ran pillar to post to get inside to receive the award. But, within a few minutes she realised that the occasion was in fact not her moment of reckoning. When asked by reporters she blamed it on the university officials for denying her the opportunity of life -- receiving a gold medal amid the august gathering. When asked for clarification the varsity officials washed off their hands stating that the student could have approached them a couple of days in advance. A few more students (not gold medal winners) also had a similar experience due to the non-receipt of call letters.
