KOLLAM: A sitting by the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) member, S. Varghese, at Kollam on Friday witnessed the submission of a unique petition. The complainant was the retired principal of the SN College for Women, S. Sulabha. During here tenure as principal, there were guest lecturers at the college for Hindi and Microbiology. Their names were sent to the Directorate of Collegiate Education(DCE) for getting clearance for payment of wages and the same was cleared. It was following this that the wages of the guest lecturers in question were paid, Prof. Sulabha submitted before the SHRC. She retired in May 2003. When she made a claim for her retirement benefits, the DCE informed her of a liability of Rs. 2.40 lakhs from her side in lieu of the wages paid to the guest lecturers. The DCE's contention was that the guest lecturers were not qualified for wages from the Government and hence the salaries drawn by the principal in their favour should be paid back. That amount will have to be deducted from her retirement benefits. The petition submitted by Prof. Sulabha appeared unique because it was Prof. Varghese, as the then Deputy Director of Collegiate Education, who had cleared the wages for the guest lecturers. Prof. Varghese will take up the matter with the DCE.
