CHENNAI: With the installation of a tower at Melur near Madurai, Reliance Infocomm now covers 400 towns in Tamil Nadu. By the end of this year, it will cover 600 towns encompassing 10,000 villages and have a subscriber base of 4.3 crores, V.G. Somasekhar, RIM Geography Head, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, said addressing mediapersons through a videoconference from Madurai, Under Phase-II, the company would invest Rs.1,500 crores. Under the overall Tamil Nadu plan, it would have its network in 30 districts, 201 taluks, and 632 towns by the year-end. The present subscriber base of mobile telephony of RIM in Tamil Nadu was 9.2 lakhs. Ajay Awasthi, RIM business head for rest of Tamil Nadu, said the company's state-of-the-art broadband network would facilitate creation of a knowledge-based State and competitive business. "Reliance Infocomm is committed to providing a range of telecom-related services, which are available to the urban population, to the rural masses." The 80,000-km terabit fibre optic network formed the backbone of its network expansion.
