Special Correspondent

The company would launch the "high quality services" in eight cities

CHENNAI: The Dishnet Wireless Limited (DWL), a unit of the Chennai-based Sterling Infotech Group, on Wednesday launched its Wi-Fi services by operationalising 53 "wireless broadband hot spots" in the city.

Launching the new set of "wireless broadband initiatives" at a news conference here, V.G. Suri, DWL, explained that the Wi-Fi hotspot services would be marketed under the new brand "Dishnet Red Broadband". These hotspots are located at hotels, restaurants, cafes, airports, railway stations, shopping malls, convention centres, hospitals, educational institutions, and other public places. Through the Enterprise and Wireless Internet Services (EWIS), the Dishnet will focus on providing three services — enterprise solutions, wireless broadband and Wi-Fi services. The Wimax technology will be used to support them.

Rs. 250-cr. investment

Stating that the new set of "wireless" initiatives had been rolled out on an investment of Rs. 250 crores, Mr. Suri said as a first step, the company would launch these "high quality and high speed broadband services" in eight cities and subsequently cover 38 more cities, thereby totalling 6,000 hotspots in the country. "Our aim is to make the Dishnet Red to become the dominant Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) service provider in the country", he said adding that the company was confident of earning Rs.107 crores during the first year of operations as it would be the pioneer in the public deployment of the Wi-Fi and Wimax technologies".

Vinesh Paperwala, District Manager, South Asia (Manufacturing Energy and Telecom, Intel Technology India private Limited), said the company took pride in associating itself with the DWL as it would extend a helping hand to maintain global standards besides extensively marketing the broadband services.
