`Bureau puller' strikes again

Staff Reporter

Police are puzzled by the mysterious bureau-puller, who has now struck 66 times in the suburbs. Houses where the windows are open but covered by anti-pest nylon netting are most often the victims. At least 30 to 45 minutes were taken to complete the "work"

CHENNAI: Yet another case of "bureau pulling" was reported in the city on Friday with gold jewellery weighing five sovereigns stolen from a home in Nanganallur.

Police said the resident, Saroja, was sleeping alone in a room in her ground-floor apartment on 42nd Street. The bureau was in another room. After cutting a portion of the nylon net on the window, the culprit removed a table fan and an iron stool, standing between the bureau and a cot. He lifted the fan and the stool and put it on the cot.

The robber then slowly pulled the bureau to the window, removed the jewellery and escaped. The incident took place on Thursday night. Saroja found the bureau open and the jewellery missing on Friday morning. Police said the culprit could have taken at least 30 to 45 minutes to complete the work. A case has been filed with the Nanganallur police.

The Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, said so far the police registered 66 `bureau pulling' cases including the latest. The offenders reportedly stole a total of about 700 sovereigns, he said.

A police study showed that "bureau pulling" cases were reported from houses where a nylon net is fixed on the windows to stop entry of mosquitoes and the windows kept open.

The Commissioner appealed to the residents not to keep the windows open during the night. Similarly, the residents also leave the key in the bureau itself. making it easy for the culprits. The residents should check whether the bureau was locked and the key kept in a safe place, before going to sleep, he warned. The United Forum of Nanganallur Welfare Associations had appealed to the police department to post more personnel to Pazhavanthangal, Adambakkam and Madipakkam stations.
