CHENNAI: : The ninth Tsunami Adalat, conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority here on Friday, disposed of 839 applications from tsunami victims in and around Chennai. With more than 1,000 people turning up, there was a near stampede, as hundreds of applicants tried to gatecrash into the Authority building. The glass panes of a metal door got smashed, injuring the Member-Secretary, M. Jeyapaul. He was treated as outpatient in the High Court dispensary. The Authority received 8,052 applications and 1,000 were forwarded to the district administration before the TNSLSA decided to hold adalats and dispose of the claims. So far 3,847 applications have been disposed of, and 1,000 more are to be considered at an adalat scheduled for May 12. The rest, who did not attend the adalat proceedings, managed to get remedy without coming here. On Friday, a group of 15 narikuravas from Kancheepuram claimed that 30 of their family members, sleeping in the Anna Square on December 26, were missing. They said the police sent them away even without registering their complaints. Scores of Muslims from Injambakkam on East Coast Road complained that though they were the worst-hit in their area, the revenue officials and fishermen panchayats ignored their interests in the rehabilitation schemes. They demanded that an exclusive tsunami adalat be held in their village. Conceding their plea, the Member-Secretary announced that a special tsunami adalat would be held at Injambakkam on May 30. The date was finalised, taking into account the ongoing election process in Kancheepuram district, said adalat counsel V. Kannadasan. 90-year-old woman, Angamma, who was brought to the adalat by some people, claimed that she hailed from Nagapattinam district but could not give any address. She did not know how she reached Chennai. The woman was sent to Vishranthi, a service organisation. The adalat officials said efforts would be made to locate her relatives, if any, in Nagapattinam district. The Principal Sessions Judge, P. Murugesan, and the Secretary of the Madras High Court Legal Services Committee, Aruna Jagadeesan, took part in the proceedings.
