CHENNAI: : It now appears that Chennai will have a new airport. But it will be far away from the centre of the city.

When it became clear that the Mumbai and New Delhi airports were being taken up for redevelopment through joint venture, Tamil Nadu stepped up lobbying for a similar project for Chennai.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's Friday announcement of allotment of 1457.5 acres for construction of the new international airport on the northwestern side of the existing airport has been welcomed by user agencies.

Sources in the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) said the Government would make available the land, valued at Rs. 300 crores, free from encumbrances and free of cost. This initiative is based on a study made by a United Kingdom consultant, who has recommended the construction of a new world-class airport.

"We welcome the announcement ... to create a world-class international gateway which will fulfil a long-felt demand of travellers," said a highly-placed source in the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

With the Anna International Terminal (AIT) now served by 13 foreign carriers, besides four Indian carriers, and with the first American-based carrier, Delta Airlines, all set to begin operations to New York through Paris from May 11, Chennai as a gateway is assuming greater significance. A team from Austrian Airlines, which held discussions with the AAI authorities in Chennai, was keen on launching direct services from here.

The TIDCO sources said efforts were on to have a "parallel runway, more apron areas" at the existing airport to facilitate the arrival of wide-bodied jets.
