KOCHI: A proposal for shifting the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus terminal to Vyttila or Chalikkavattom has come up before an expert committee formed to prepare a development plan for Kochi. The proposal was discussed on Friday at a meeting of legislators from the district with Babu Jacob, advisor to the State Government. Mr. Jacob has been asked to prepare projects to be implemented in the district. The authorities concerned are also exploring the possibility of making the land at Vyttila, owned by the Agricultural Department, available for the project. However, it is learnt that the department has plans to use the land for some of its own projects. In that case, Chalikkavattom will be selected. The Kochi Corporation owns 10 acres of land at Chalikkavattom and the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is willing to fund the project. The proposal is to construct a commercial complex on the site so that the project will generate revenue, Mr. Jacob said. Once the KSRTC stand is shifted near the National Highway, the entry of KSRTC buses to the city can be avoided. The existing bus stand can also be used for city buses, Mr. Jacob said. Mr. Jacob is planning to submit a report on development projects within a week, though the deadline fixed for filing is Saturday. Antony Isaac, GCDA Chairman, said the authority was willing to fund any project that would commercially viable. The proposal for shifting the KSRTC bus stand would be beneficial to the city, he said. A proposal for setting up a bus terminal at Mattancherry also came up for consideration. As there was a project proposal to this effect, it was decided to take up the project. Extension of the proposed National Highway from Vallarpadom to National Highways 17 and 47 and Athani was also suggested at the meeting. Taking into the account the expected increase in the number of trucks and containers reaching the city after the commissioning of the Vallarpadom Container Terminal, it was suggested that two high-speed roads from Athani be constructed.
Road projects
Development of 16 road projects, including the Thammanam-Pulleppady road to Padma junction and Kaloor-Kadavanthra road to Bund Road and Pottakuzhy, development of waterways, including the Edappally and Thevara-Perandoor canals, and a waterway corridor along the airport-seaport road were also suggested. V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, Industries Minister; K. Babu, K.V. Thomas, M.A. Chandrasekharan and M.A. Kuttappan, MLAs; A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, District Collector; and A.V. George, Deputy Mayor, attended the meeting. Senior officials of Southern Railways, Kerala Water Authority and other departments were present.
