THANJAVUR: The bird sanctuary at Vaduvur near Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district is given a facelift with a view to attract both birds and tourists. According to Forest department officials, ten mounds, measuring a height of 1.5 mts running to a length of 50 mts and 10 mts in breadth, have been formed in the Vaduvur lake for the birds to nestle when water is there.Aquatic weeds, which occupied most part of the lake, were removed at a cost of Rs.60,000. Steps have been taken to erect five sign boards at a cost of Rs.50,000 to provide information guide tourists regarding the species of birds that visit the lake. Added to this, the watch tower has been renovated at a cost of Rs.5,000, officials said. Besides these works, the Forest department is organising workshops to create awareness about birds and wildlife.Nearly 60 students from different schools and colleges participated in the workshop conducted recently, the officials said. The lake attracts birds from August to February. Open bill stork, spoon bills, White Ibis, Painted storks, Pin tail ducks, Coots, Egrets, Flamingoes frequent the lake every year.
Another sanctuary
Yet another bird sanctuary at Udhayamarthandapuram in Muthupettai division in Tiruvarur district also attracts large number of birds. Kallaperambur lake near Thanjavur has also been declared as a bird sanctuary by the Forest department. But improvement works have to be undertaken in the lake.
