All set for Group I main exam today

Staff Reporter

50,726 candidates to appear in test

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) is all set to conduct the Group - I main examination at 112 centres in six cities across the State from Sunday. The examination is being conducted in two phases from May 1 to 7 and again from May 28 till June 11.

Some 50,726 candidates will take the test to be conducted at Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam. Of this, 25,331 candidates are appearing in Hyderabad followed by 8,667 in Visakhapatnam, 7,300 in Vijayawada, 5,396 in Tirupati and 3,998 in Warangal.

In fact, only 28,865 candidates had passed the preliminary examination held in March last. But after the qualifying marks were brought down from 66 to 61 marks, another test was conducted in October last in which 21,861 candidates qualified. The AP Administrative Tribunal in a recent direction asked the commission to withhold the results of the 21,861 candidates till further orders were issued.

Overcoming legal hurdles created by the candidates, the APPSC is going to recruit 528 candidates for Group - I posts, which have been lying vacant for many years. "It is after a gap of 10 years that the commission is going for such large recruitment at single go," the commission member, C. Chandrasekhar, told The Hindu.

Decks cleared

All arrangements were in place for conducting the examination of the five districts. The Collectors concerned and the police chiefs would directly supervise the test. Any candidate found carrying cellular phones inside the examination hall will invite stern action.
