UDUPI: The Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti has said that it will join hands with other non-governmental organisations in getting Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts declared environmentally sensitive areas. In a press release issued here, the general secretary of the samiti, Yellur Madhava Shetty, said some organisations from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have also joined the endeavour. These organisations will soon submit a report to the Government, he added. When Cogentrix planned to set up a thermal power plant here, the Supreme Court directed NEERI to conduct environmental studies in the coastal areas of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. NEERI, in its report, said coal-based thermal projects are neither suitable nor viable in the region, he recalled. When a delegation led by Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, and including representatives of the samiti met the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, on March 24 and 25, Mr. Singh said coal-based thermal projects will not be allowed in the district, he said.
