No water supply

ERODE: There would be no water supply on Sunday in the Periyasemur panchayat, a suburb in Erode.

The panchayat officials stated that a sudden breakage was noticed in the water supply main at Odaipallam area.

Officials were engaged in repairing the main.

As they stopped the pumping of water, supply was suspended on Saturday also. Water supply would be resumed on Monday. - Staff Reporter

Seven-year RI

ERODE: The Subordinate Judge II, Gobichettipalayam, Jaganathan, on Friday awarded seven years RI to one Senthilkumar for dowry harassment. Senthilkumar of Punjaipuliampatty married Chinna Meenakshi of Mysore on February 24, 2002. Chinna Meenakshi committed suicide by hanging herself in the house on July 18, 2002. On the complaint of her parents ,Senthilkumar was arrested. It was learnt that he harassed Meenakshi demanding nine sovereigns of jewels as dowry. Unable to able to bear his torture, she committed suicide.

Four get life term ERODE: The Bhavani Fast Track Court Judge, Pandurangan, on Friday awarded life sentence to four persons in a murder for gain case. The prosecution case was that a plastic merchant of Thalapalayam near Vellitirupur, was returning home with Rs. 12,000 on April 23, 2003, when four persons, Thangavel, 23, Satheeshkumar, 21, Karthick, 21, and Rameshkumar, 22, of Komarapalayam, killed him and escaped with the cash.

Cases registered

ERODE: Cases have been registered against two persons for water pilferage at Papathikadu-II in Surampatty here on Saturday. The Surampatty Municipal Chairman, S.M.C. Shanmugam detected that the water was being used for coconut trees and their gardens. Last week, a plumber, Kandasamy, was arrested for helping five residents to pilfer water for domestic use.

March to Plachimada

MALAPPURAM: The Nationalist Youth Congress will take out a march to the Coca-Cola factory at Plachimada on Thursday, raising the slogan that "land, wood and water is for posterity," said M.C. Unnikrishnan, state general secretary of the party in a statement here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Plea against communalism

MALAPPURAM: An educational meeting held as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Jamia Nadwiyya at Edavanna near here on Saturday warned against the tendency to communalise the problems of minorities. Giving a communal or caste colour to minority issues will lead to dangerous polarisations in the society, creating hurdles for national development, the meet said.

The Minister for Education, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, inaugurated the meet.

DMK plea to poll panel

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has petitioned the Chief Election Commissioner on "certain unfair practices" adopted by the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the byelections to the Gummidipoondi and Kancheepuram seats.

Charging the AIADMK with "planning to manipulate bogus identity cards... for bogus voting," the petition appealed to the Election Commission to withdraw the bank passbook from the list of alternate identification criteria prescribed by it. The DMK pointed to the previous instances where it had charged the ruling party with casting bogus votes by issuing "hundreds of Post Office Savings Bank passbooks." — Special Correspondent

Vice-Chancellor

CHENNAI: The State Government has appointed a five-member search committee under the chairmanship of K. Kuzhandaivel, Chancellor, Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore, for selecting a three-member panel for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur.

The other members of the panel are: S. Agathiyalingam (Government nominee), E.P. Perumal, (Senate nominee), and Sirpi Balasubramanian and Aruna Rajagopal (Syndicate nominees).

The committee will submit the report to the Governor and Chancellor, for selecting the Vice-Chancellor, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

Sales tax exemption

CHENNAI: The State Government has exempted gold jewellery manufactured by the Viswakarma Traditional Goldsmiths Industrial Cooperative Society, Coimbatore, from the purview of Sales Tax. The tax exemption will be for a period of one year, according to a gazette notification. — Special Correspondent

SP for Pudukottai

CHENNAI: The State Government has posted K.N. Sathiyamurthy as Superintendent of Police for Pudukottai district. He was hitherto, Superintendent of Police, Tamil Nadu Commando Force in Chennai. He succeeds R. Arumugam, who had already been transferred. — Special Correspondent

Debt recovery claims

CHENNAI: A Debts Recovery Lok Adalat conducted by the Debts Recovery Tribunal-I here settled nine cases, involving a claim amount of Rs. 2.17 crores on Friday.

According to the Presiding Officer, Harihar P. Chaturvedi, 25 pending cases involving a claim sum of Rs. 23 crores were taken up for hearing. Of the settled amount, Rs. 1.72 crores was recovered on the spot. The defaulters concerned would pay the remaining Rs. 45 lakhs within a specified period. The bench comprised retired judge, A.S. Khan, former banker K. Jai Shankar and advocate B. Baghiyalakshmi.

The recovery through adalats alone stands at Rs. 61.12 crores, he said. — Staff Reporter

Singapore promotion scheme

CHENNAI: The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has extended the "Uniquely affordable Singapore" promotional scheme until June 30. It was launched jointly by Air India and Indian Bank in December last year, offered holiday packages to Singapore-bound travellers from Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The scheme was extended keeping in mind the vacation and the peak season. Pirated VCDs seized

TIRUNELVELI : The police have arrested a youth on a charge of possessing pirated video compact discs of latest Tamil movies.

The police said K. Nagarajan (27) Kailasapuram was picked up by the Inspector, Stanley Jones, when he was suspiciously moving around in the Junction area on Saturday.

When the police searched his bag, they found six VCDs of `Mumbai Xpress', two VCDs of `Chandramukhi' and a VCD of `Ayya' inside.

Meanwhile, the Vickramasingapuram police raided a video library at Sivanthipuram and seized six VCDs of `Chandramukhi', four VCDs of `Mumbai Xpress', and two obscene movie VCDs. The police arrested Lingamani (26), one of the partners of the shop, and the hunt is on to nab Ganesan of Ambalavaanapuram, another partner.

Held for screening obscene movies

Tuticorin : The manager and operator of a cinema theatre at Tiruchendur were arrested on Friday on the charges of screening obscene movies.

Official sources said that based on a tip-off that movies containing pornographic footages were screened at the theatre, a special police team checked the theatre and seized four film rolls containing obscene clippings.

Thiraviam (39) and Prabhakar ( 30) were arrested and remanded under Section(1) (a) of Cinema Photographic Act, 1952, the police said.

Two held for assaulting policeman

TIRUNELVELI : The Perumalpuram police have arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting a head-constable.

The police said that Ramalingam, a head-constable attached to the Tirunelveli City Intelligence section, in the plainclothes, was monitoring the festival of a temple near the Armed Reserve Police grounds at Palayamkottai last night. As two persons, sitting on their two-wheeler, were witnessing the festival for hours together, Mr. Ramalingam enquired with them, which led to a quarrel between them. When the altercation intensified, they attacked the policeman and left the place.

An injured Ramalingam was admitted to the hospital. Based on a complaint from him, the police arrested Sivasubramanian (41) of Paattapaththu and Muthuramalingam (46) of Kulavanigarpuram.

Huge haul of liquor

TUTICORIN : A special police team seized whiskey, brandy, rum and beer bottles from different parts of the town in raids conducted on Friday and arrested Loganathan ( 22), Arokia Stephen

(34), Samson (28), Jebamoni (31) and Mareesan (42).

The police said that 61 beer, five whisky, seven brandy and three rum bottles were recovered from the accused.

All accused were remanded under Tamilnadu Prohibition Act.

Meanwhile, sleuths of the Prohibition Enforcement Wing arrested Selvakumar (41) and Paulraj

(45) from Kulasekarapattinam, for illegal possession of toddy in cans. The accused were remanded._ Staff Reporter.

Handicrafts expo

THANJAVUR: Ashok Kumar Das, Superintendent of Police, inaugurated a summer sales exhibition on handicrafts from various states at the Poompuhar showroom on Gandhiji road here today.

According to R. Kalaimani, Regional Manager, Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation, handicrafts in different rates ranging from Rs.27 to Rs.30,000 are on display.

A discount of 10 per cent will be given for products purchased in the exhibition, which will be on till May 19. — Staff Reporter

Council plea to Govt.

TIRUVARUR: The District Panchayat Council has appealed to the Government to appoint the Joint Director of Agriculture for the district immediately.

A resolution adopted at the meeting of the council's standing committee on Food and Agriculture held at Tiruvarur on Friday, pointed out that the post, which was lying vacant for the past two-and-a-half years, was vital for an agriculture-oriented district like Tiruvarur. — Staff Reporter

Welfare aid to disabled

PERAMBALUR: Spectacles, hearing aids, tri-cycles and other assistance worth Rs.3.25 lakhs were distributed by the Collector, D.Vivekanandan, to 100 differently-able children, enrolled in different schools in Perambalur district, under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme. — Staff Reporter
