CHENNAI: Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today announced assistance to the tune of Rs. 1.50 lakh for the next of kin of the three students who died in a wall collapse at an aided school in Sethur village in Virudhunagar district yesterday. In a statement here, she said each of the families of the victims would be handed over Rs.50,000. Assitance would also be extended to eight students who were injured in the mishap, at the rate of Rs. 15,000 for each of them who were grievously injured and Rs. 6,000 for each of those who suffered minor injuries. The assistance would be provided from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, she said.
Headmaster held
The Sethur police arrested two persons, including Palanichamy, headmaster of the Sri Rama Elementary School, where four students died after a portion of the school compound wall fell on them on Friday. President of the school management committee Sankaraiah was also arrested. Secretary K. Selvaraj, against whom a case under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code was registered, was absconding, police said. The Joint Director of Elementary Education A. Sankar; the Virudhunagar Chief Educational Officer, S. Sethurama Varma and the District Elementary Education Officer, T. Gopalsamy, inspected the accident site spot.
