CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has extended May Day greetings to the working class in the State. In a statement here on Saturday, she said May Day signified the rise in revolt of the working people, who had been subjected to oppression, to assert their rights. Ms. Jayalalithaa expressed boundless happiness over extending the greetings to the workers, who had been contributing to the progress of the State through their labour.
Karunanidhi's appeal
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi appealed to the working class to vow along with the people of all walks of life to "put an end through ballot to the Government which had deprived them of the hard-won rights such as the right to strike." He urged them to rededicate themselves to the cause of defeating the "anti-people and anti-secular" State Government with the hope that the working people would have the last laugh. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president G.K.Vasan urged the working people to extend cooperation to the United Progressive Alliance Government to ensure the whole-hearted implementation of the schemes introduced by it to promote their welfare. He commended the Centre's decision to hike Provident Fund interest rate to 9.5 per cent. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan appealed to the working class to take a pledge to intensify the struggle against the policies of globalisation and liberalisation, besides "taking forward the fight against forces of communalism which disrupted the unity of the people." His party would express solidarity with the struggles against the "anti-people and undemocratic" policies of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government in the State. State secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian said that the unity of the workers of the world had become more relevant now, as the working class in the globe had rallied together in the struggle against "globalisation and international capitalism." Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko wished the working class every success in the fight against the "injustices and repressive measures of the ruling class." Dravidar Kazhagam president K.Veeramani said, "Let us rededicate ourselves to the cause of protecting the working class from the trident of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation."
