Special squad to tighten vigil against illicit liquor

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The illicit liquor tragedies that struck Nelamangala and Sakleshpur in close succession and claimed more than 35 lives, has put the district administration on high alert.

The fact that a few people were distilling arrack illegally in the district had come to the notice of the authorities. The authorities have warned the public to be vigilant against the illegal brew, which contains high doses of methanol.

The department's warning came soon after a meeting was convened by the Deputy Commissioner, G. Kumar Naik, in Mysore on Saturday. The meeting was attended by the Police Commissioner, Pravin Sood; the Commissioner of Mysore, A.B. Ibrahim; the Excise Superintendent, Lakshminarasimhaiah; and the Joint Excise Commissioner, Rajanna.

A special squad will be formed in this regard. The squad will visit identified areas and gather information.

The public appeal issued by the department said that arrack licensed by the Government, which is sold by authorised vendors, is prepared under the Government's supervision. The authorities have sought the cooperation of the public to curb the illicit liquor menace in the district. The public can alert the authorities and report instances of illegal distillation, and sale, by calling 2422302 (Deputy Commissioner), 2561775 (Joint Commissioner of Excise, Mysore Division), 2541863 (Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Mysore), 2442453 and 2524060 (Excise officials).
