MYSORE: The former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, M.S. Nagaraja Rao, has stressed the need for a public movement to conserve the heritage of Mysore

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Institution of Valuers here on Saturday, Mr. Rao pointed out that Mysore is endowed with excellent structures that constitute the city's built heritage. The concept of heritage, however, cannot be restricted to monuments and has to include cultural practices that are inherited from the past. This also includes natural heritage, intellectual heritage, and cultural heritage, all of which manifest themselves in the form of artistic creations of temples, churches, etc., that have contributed to the evolution of a cultured society.

However, he regretted that barring the main palace, none of the other monuments in the city have been accorded the importance that is due to them. He said maintaining cleanliness is the first step towards conservation. He called for creating awareness among the public about the need for greater involvement on their part. In the context of creating public awareness about Mysore's heritage, Mr. Rao stressed the need for reviving cultural practices. He said there is a need for a public forum to give the movement a thrust.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, J. Shashidhar Prasad, called for a scientific valuation of structures. He also received a memorandum from the Institution of Valuers to introduce a new course in valuation at the university.
