ERODE: The Centre has sanctioned the National Child Labour Scheme for Erode district and under the "Child Labour Abolition Supporting School" (CLASS), 28 schools would be started. One of the schools was started on Saturday at Asokapuri in Periyarnagar, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan.
Incentives
Inaugurating the school, he said that the Labour Welfare Department had identified 1,400 child labourers. Under the National Child Labour Scheme, they were rescued and admitted to the schools. They would be given education for a year and sent to the regular schools. The Collector said that in many cases, due to poverty parents sent their children to work. So, the Department was providing Rs. 100 per month as incentive to the parents whose children were admitted to the CLASS. The Collector also said that the aim of the district administration was to make the district child labour-free. Later, people of Asokapuri appealed to the Collector to instruct the Housing Board to effect repairs to their houses. The Collector told them that the houses were owned by the slum dwellers and it was impossible to spend money for repairs. He suggested them to form an association and deposit some money and he would also grant some money from the Collector's fund.
