THRISSUR: The Subordinate Legislative Committee headed by T. V. Chandramohan, held a sitting at the Anakotta (elephant yard) of the Guruvayur Devaswom on Friday to evaluate the implementation of the Captive Elephant Management and Maintenance Rules, 2003. Framing of clear-cut norms for the storage of dressed tusks (ivory), starting a training centre for mahouts at Anakotta, launching facilities for the burial of deceased elephants and setting up a mating yard for captive breeding of elephants were some of the suggestions that were mooted at the sitting. There was also a proposal for appointing a nodal officer of the Forest Department in every district for issuing an ownership certificate for captive elephants. The veterinarians, K.C. Panikker and Muralidharan Nair, suggested that the Forest Department should also set up wayside resting stations for the elephants which are being transported for long-distance festivals. The Anakotta attracts a large number of tourists round the year.
