Next polls will be fought under new leader: Naqvi

Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI: BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Friday that a new second-generation leader would steer the party in the next general elections.

"The guidance and leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani has always been there and will continue to remain available to the party. A leader from the second generation will lead the party in the next Lok Sabha elections," Mr. Naqvi said on the sidelines of a "janpanchayat" at Bilaspur village in Uttar Pradesh. His remarks have set off another wave of controversy after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K.S. Sudarshan's remarks that both Mr. Vajpayee and Mr. Advani should step aside to make way for younger leaders in the party.

Asked whether there was any confusion on the leadership issue, Mr. Naqvi said: "There is no confusion. Mr. Advani himself had hinted about six months ago that a new generation leader should lead the party in the next elections," Mr. Naqvi told The Hindu.
