CHENNAI:
The suspense, if any, over the appointment of a new Chief Secretary to the Tamil Nadu Government ended this evening.
The Principal Secretary Finance and Development Commissioner, N. Narayanan, took over as the administrative chief from Lakshmi Pranesh, who has retired.
Mr. Narayanan has the distinction of having headed the Finance department for the most number of years. He served as Finance Secretary in the M.G. Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa regimes.
After being the Finance Secretary during her previous tenure, he was brought back to the same position by Ms. Jayalalithaa when she returned to power in 2001, when the State faced its worst financial crisis.
The Government not only emerged out of that fiscal mess, but also reached a "fairly comfortable position" in management of finances.
