NEW DELHI: India on Saturday welcomed the ``lifting'' of the emergency in Nepal as the ``first step towards the beginning of a political process'' in the Himalayan kingdom. ``We call for the release of all political leaders still in custody and restoration of civil liberties which would open the way for reconciliation between the two constitutional forces,'' the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said. ``It has been our consistent view that multiparty democracy represented by political parties and the constitutional monarchy should work together to address the serious challenges facing Nepal today.''
Arms supply
After a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and King Gyanendra in Jakarta, some ``assurances'' were conveyed to New Delhi in return for which arms supply to Kathmandu was to have been resumed. However, it appears that New Delhi has again placed the issue of arms supply ``under review. '' For, one of King Gyanendra's first actions after these ``assurances'' was the rearrest of the former Prime Minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba. There was no reference to the issue of arms supply in Saturday's remarks by the External Affairs Ministry spokesman.
Killings
The Asian Centre for Human Rights said the number of persons killed during the emergency increased by over 100 per cent with the killing of 655 persons from February 1 to April 30.
