MUMBAI: South Central Railways' Amit Shrivas scored off a lovely reverse flick in the fifth minute even as the other players were just beginning to settle down to give a promising start to the match against Corps of Signals. But, what initially showed great promise turned out to be a lacklustre affair in the 43rd all-India Bombay Gold Cup at the Mahindra Stadium on Saturday. Signals showed purpose, speed and aggression and pressed hard for the equaliser after the break and succeeded through a Paramjit Singh conversion of the first penalty corner awarded in the match in the 55th minute. Jolted, SCR showed some enterprise, but the match was decided by the tie-breaker and SCR proved strong from the spot to eventually win the match 5-3. Dung Dung, Amit Kumar, Bipin Thimmiah and Ramesh converted easily, while Signals' very first attempt by Ghan S. Das was savedby SCR goalkeeper Ayyappa Swamy. Rakesh Kumar and Vinod Sharma were successful, but Narinder Salaria hit wide. In the first match of the evening Uttar Pradesh XI prevailed over All India Customs 1-0 through a Ravi Bharti hit in the 55th minute.
