NEDUMBASSERY: Location to set up an engineering base in the State for the Air-India Express (AIE), the no-frills subsidiary of Air-India that was launched on Friday, is yet to be identified, the Director of Engineering, Air-India, Mumbai, Babu Peter, has said. Speaking to presspersons on Friday at Nedumbassery airport on the sidelines of the inaugural function of AIE, he said that both the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) and the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Society have come forward to be considered as the engineering hub. CIAL authorities have expressed willingness to allot land to house the hangar to be set up as part of the engineering base on lease rental. He said that negotiations were on and the location would be selected on the basis of favourable terms. A decision on the location was expected in three months, he said. Mr. Peter said that the Air-India Board had already cleared the proposal for setting up a hangar exclusively for AIE at a projected cost of Rs. 50 crores. Once the location is identified and a project coordinator is appointed, the hangar could be completed in two years, he said. The proposed hangar would have twin bays; one for periodical checking and the other for major maintenance of aircraft. Besides this, separate workshops would also be set up. It is yet to be decided whether provision for `D-check' or structural checking has to be maintained at this hangar. The construction of the hangar would be completed in two phases, he said. The Air-India Board has also approved for a hangar in Delhi for which land is also available. Construction of hangars at both Delhi and Kerala was expected to begin simultaneously, he said. He said that Air-India considering the lack of expertise of its staff in Boeing 737-800 aircraft had entered into an engineering contract with Jet Airways for the time being, which already has similar aircrafts in its fleet. The budget airline will start operating from Chennai from next year with services proposed to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
