May Day celebrations

KOTTAYAM: The May Day celebrations by the CPI(M) in the district will be inaugurated by party State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, at Pampady, near here, on Sunday. The two-day celebrations got under way on Saturday with a mini marathon, an exhibition match of the native ball, a game specific to Kottayam and adjoining areas, and a bike race. A cultural pageantry will feature an equestrian parade, roller-skating, floats and display of traditional art forms. The public meeting to be addressed by Mr. Vijayan, will be presided over by V.N. IT dealers' meet

THRISSUR: The State conference of the All Kerala IT Dealers Association (AKITDA) that will begin here on Saturday will focus on the problems of E-waste in the State. At a press conference here on Friday, the office-bearers of the association said clandestine attempts are being made to dump computers and other electronic equipment from developed countries such as the United States and Canada in developing countries like India.

Paediatricians meet

THRISSUR: About 200 paediatricians from different parts of the State and outside will attend the State conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics to be held here on May 1. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the office-bearers of the Thrissur branch of the academy said several leading figures in the field like K. P. B. Nair, K. C. Rajagopalan, Zulfiker Ahmed, Naveen Thacker and T. U. Sukumaran, will be delivering talks at the conference. — Staff Reporter

Student injured

Thiruvananthapuram: A 20-year-old engineering college student was injured when she was hit by a police jeep at Ayurveda College junction on Saturday afternoon. The injured person was identified was Aparna. She has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Campaign to address environmental issues

KOLLAM: A coordinated movement is to be launched by environmentalists in the district to address various problems. The decision was taken at a meeting of environmentalists held here on Saturday. The issues that are a cause for concern include granite quarries at Muttara Maruthi hillock, degradation of Sasthamcotta and Ashtamudi lakes and mineral sand-mining at Alapad.

Rise in CD ratio

of banks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The credit-deposit ratio of banks in the State has gone up by 5.79 per cent. The ratio went up from 50.88 at the end of March 2004 to 56.67 per cent by the end of March 2005, the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) said in an official release here today. It said SBT's credit-deposit ratio had improved from 60.34 per cent to 62.88 per cent. It recorded a net profit of Rs. 247.13 crores in 2004-05 as against Rs. 244.60 crores in the previous year. — Special Correspondent

Kudumbasree credit exceeds Rs.1,000 cr.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The credit disbursed among Kudumbasree neighbourhood groups so far has exceeded Rs.1,000 crores. The total deposit mobilised so far is Rs.473.57 crores, the Minister for Local Self-Government, K. Kutty Ahmed Kutty, said in an official release here today.

He said the scheme for cultivating barren lands would be creating waves in the State. Nearly 3 lakh families from 802 panchayats had been cultivating 16,133.66 hectares for the past three years. — Special Correspondent

NDF campaign

KOCHI: The National Development Front (NDF) will embark on a State-wide campaign from May 1 to 20 to debunk the belief that Muslim fundamentalism is getting stronger in the State and to highlight the Government's `negative' attitude on the issue of reservation. Addressing presspersons at the Ernakulam Press Club, the NDF general secretary, Nasrudeen Elamaram, said the resistance put forth by Adivasis and Dalits was being portrayed as fundamentalism. — Staff Reporter

Takes charge of

Pallipuram range

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P.G. Gopinathan Nair, Additional DIGP, CRPF, took charge as DIG, Pallipuram range, on Saturday. Mr. Gopinathan Nair will have his headquarters at Pallipuram with administrative control of the Group Centre, Pallipuram, and five battalions stationed in various parts of the country. Besides, he will have the operational control of CRPF battalions deployed in Kerala and Lakshadweep. — Special Correspondent
