`Prime Minister slighted all-party delegation'

Manmohan failed to ensure presence of Water Resources Minister: Ananth Kumar

GULBARGA: The General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and former Union Minister, H.N. Ananth Kumar, on Saturday accused the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, of having slighted the all-party delegation from Karnataka by not ensuring the presence of the Water Resources Minister, Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, when it presented a memorandum on the "illegal" irrigation projects taken up by Andhra Pradesh. Terming the visit to New Delhi by the delegation "eyewash," Mr. Ananth Kumar told presspersons here that it did not serve any purpose. The delegation did not secure any assurance from Dr. Singh that the illegal projects taken up by Andhra Pradesh in the Krishna Basin will be stopped, he added.

The BJP leader, who was part of the delegation, said the delegation members were taken by surprise at the absence of Mr. Dasmunshi and officials of the department at the meeting with the Prime Minister. No official of the Central Water Commission was present, he added.

The Prime Minister gave the delegation only eight minutes, and only told it that the "law of the land will prevail." The BJP wanted the Union Government to ensure that laws are not violated by the Central Water Commission and the Water Resource Ministry by giving clearances to illegal projects taken up by Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Kumar said.
