BANGALORE: The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has said that the urban poor, including slum dwellers, will be covered under the Yeshaswini health scheme.

Addressing the "Daridra Narayana" rally of slum dwellers and others here on Saturday, he said the Government will ensure that all poor families are covered under the scheme. There is a complaint that poor families who are not members of cooperative societies have no access to healthcare, and the Government has decided to pay the fee for enrolment in societies, he added.

Mr. Siddaramaiah, who is also the Finance Minister, said adequate funds will be provided for all welfare schemes. Directions have been issued to the Food and Civil Supplies Department to provide subsidised foodgrains to the urban poor. The department has taken up a detailed survey of slums in Bangalore, he added.

Booklet released

As part of the rally, a booklet was released to show that the previous Janata Dal Government (1994-99) had taken important decisions for the welfare of the poor, including large-scale regularisation of unauthorised constructions. Among the others who spoke were the Janata Dal (S) State unit President, N. Thippanna; the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash; and the party General Secretary, Y.S.V. Datta.

The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, H.C. Mahadevappa; the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, H.S. Mahadev Prasad; the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna; the Minister for Tourism, D.T. Jayakumar; the Minister for Medical Education, Iqbal Ansari; and the Working President of the Janata Dal (S), H.D.Kumaraswamy, were present.

Government buses took slum dwellers to the venue. Arrangements were made by the organisers to provide food to the nearly 50,000 people who attended the rally.
