GULBARGA: The Water Resources Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, said on Saturday that the Government has sought the removal of the Union Water Resources Department Secretary, Harinarayan, from the post since he is from the Andhra Pradesh cadre of the Indian Administrative Service and was, till recently, the Irrigation Department Secretary of that State. Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Kharge said the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who took an all-party delegation to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to complain about the "illegal" projects of Andhra Pradesh, spoke to Dr. Singh about the official. He said that at a time when the issue of sharing surplus waters of the Krishna is under adjudication by a tribunal, it would be unfair on the part of the Centre to continue an official in the top post in the Water Resources Department who is from one of the riparian States. Mr. Kharge said Mr. Harinarayan, as Irrigation Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, "supported" the illegal projects taken up by that State in the Krishna Basin. According to Mr. Kharge, Mr. Harinarayan also supported that State's opposition to a minor drinking water project at Paragodu in Kolar district. The State Government expressed apprehension to the Prime Minister that the official's presence in the Water Resource Department will influence decisions in favour of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Kharge said.
