Funds released

HAVERI: The Deputy Commissioner of Haveri has released Rs. 10.65 lakhs including foodgrains from the Natural Calamities Fund to the Municipal Commissioner of Ranebennur for tackling the water problems in six wards of the Town Municipal Council. The works are to be taken up in Siddeshwar Nagar, Ambedkar School area, Bireshwar Nagar, Umashankar Naagar, Garawadnagar, and Roddanavar Oni. — Special Correspondent

Training programme

Bidar: The Abdul Nazir Sab Rural Development Institute has started a satellite-based training programme for the newly elected gram panchayat members in Bidar taluk. Members of 33 gram panchayats will undergo a two-day training. They will be introduced to the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act, the system of function of the panchayat raj and other relevant laws. The programme was inaugurated on April 27 and will end on June 14. — Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The Sunni Guidance Bureau has published a book, "Namazinna Nanthara Samuhika Prarthane." The Chairman of the State Minorities Commission, K.S. Mohammed Masood, will release it at the Kandaya Bhavan here on Tuesday, Hameed Kandak, Vice-President of the bureau, told presspersons here on Saturday. Public meeting

MYSORE: A public meeting has been convened to invite suggestions from the people to solve the drinking water supply problem. The meeting will be held on May 2 at the Institution of Engineers at 5 p.m. The Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, and the chairman of Mysore city Action Task Force, R. Prohibitory orders

MYSORE: Prohibitory orders will be clamped around all CET centres in the city on May 3 and 4, according to an official press release. The ban orders will be enforced from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in a radius of 200 metres of each centre on both the days. Only bona fide candidates and staff involved in the conduct of the examinations will be allowed to enter the premises. Those found violating the orders will be prosecuted, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Plea against communalism

MALAPPURAM: An educational meeting held as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Jamia Nadwiyya at Edavanna near here on Saturday warned against the tendency to communalise the problems of minorities. Giving a communal or caste colour to minority issues will lead to dangerous polarisations in the society, creating hurdles for national development, the meet said.

The Minister for Education, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, inaugurated the meet.

4,700 to write CET in Hubli

HUBLI: As many as 4,700 students will appear for the Common Entrance Test to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in nine centres in Hubli-Dharwad.

A press release issued here said it has been decided to have one district-level officer as an observer and nine principals as supervisors in each of the centres. Arrangements have been made to reach the question papers and answer papers in time, it added. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

HUBLI: One person was killed and one injured in an accident involving a truck and a scooter on Friday night.

The dead has been identified as James Christopher (53), a railway employee.

The pillion rider, Narashimha Murthy, who was injured in the accident, has been admitted to hospital.The police said the accident occurred around 11 p.m. when James was taking a turn near the petrol station on Lamington Road. — Staff Correspondent

Hooch destroyed

HUBLI: The Kalghatgi Police on Friday raided two places in the taluk and destroyed illicit liquor worth Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Tension in Tumkur village

TUMKUR: There was tension in the Baddihally tank command area on Saturday when farmers prevented a move to fill the tank with mud. At around 3 p.m., mud was brought in five vehicles and dumped into the tank. As news spread, farmers arrived from five villages around Baddihalli. Pranalinga Shivasali, project director of urban development cell, told them that the Deputy Commissioner, M.B. Dyaberi, had ordered that the tank be filled. However, Mr. Shivasali decided to suspend filling the tank. He was told that destruction of the tank will affect the groundwater level. — Staff Correspondent

Top official caught

in traffic jam

MANGALORE: A minor accident near Bangra Kuloor along National Highway 17 here on Saturday afternoon led to a traffic jam, resulting in long lines of vehicles on the road. The Commissioner for Information, C. Chandrashekar, who was on his way to Udupi from Mangalore after an official inspection programme here, was caught in the jam. The police, who were informed, directed the Panambur Deputy Superintendent of Police, Yogappa, and the jurisdictional officials to tackle the situation. Krishna turns

73 today

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, will celebrate his 73rd birthday on Sunday, when the 45th Foundation Day of Maharashtra will also be celebrated. The coincidence has left Mr. Krishna with a tightly packed schedule from the morning. He will deliver an address on All India Radio and Doordarshan on the occasion of Maharashtra Day and inspect a parade in central Mumbai. BANGALORE: The Universal College Of Learning (UCOL), New Zealand, in association with the Canadian Institute of International Studies (CIIS), Mohali, organised a seminar for nurses on Saturday to inform them of job opportunities abroad. UCOL had introduced a course where Indian nurses can upgrade their diploma (which is not recognised in European and other countries) to an internationally recognised degree. The yearlong course will be conducted on the CIIS campus in Mohali. The course for the next year will commence on May 25.
